KING CITY, Monterey County — November 3, 2026. The first unofficial Election Night reports show voters in South Monterey County supporting two consequential ballot questions: a school district reorganization known as Measure J and a local sales-tax increase in King City known as Measure P. Each requires its own official legal threshold and final canvass before implementation.
Measure J: proposed school district restructuring
Measure J would reorganize King City Union School District, Greenfield Union School District and South Monterey County Joint Union High School District into two proposed unified K–12 school districts. The initial countywide relevant count showed 2,161 yes votes (70.67%) and 897 no votes (29.33%). Because it affects more than one community, its outcome is not simply a King City municipal vote.
Measure P: King City’s tax proposal
King City’s Measure P would increase the city’s transactions and use tax from 1% to 1.5% to help fund local services. The first report showed 676 yes votes (75.28%) and 222 no votes (24.72%). These figures are preliminary, not certification that the measure has taken effect.
Why local voters should follow the canvass
Changes to school governance and city revenue can affect service delivery, budgets and local accountability for years. In the proposed district reorganization, the county must also resolve which candidates are seated on the newly structured governing boards if the measure is approved.
